What a banya or hammam is

A banya is a Russian or Eastern European bathhouse built around a very hot, steamy room (the parilka), cold plunges and long breaks with tea and food. A hammam is the Turkish and Moroccan steam bath: warm, humid marble rooms, washing rituals and a scrub. US venues mix the traditions freely.

What to bring

  • Flip-flops
  • A swimsuit for co-ed areas
  • A felt sauna hat if you have one (most rent them)
  • Time: banya visits are long and social

Etiquette

  • Ask before adding steam or swinging a venik (the leafy bundle) near others.
  • Take cold breaks between rounds and drink water or tea, not alcohol.
  • In a hammam, follow the attendant's lead on washing and scrubbing order.

Where this comes from

Source: the venue's Google Maps listing (category "Sauna"), checked November 2, 2026, and the venue's own website. We list it as a banya or hammam because of its name or Google category says banya, Russian or Turkish bath, or hammam. Ratings are Google's, shown as a count only; we do not copy reviews. Prices are not shown because they change; see the venue's site. Is something wrong, or has it closed? Email contact@saunasnear.com and we will fix it.
